The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chiefs reached some 28 spots for Ethan Driskell, and value like that does not grow back.
Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with quarterback and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Allen pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a problem off the edge, reach and all. A real need, handled.
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves quarterback and interior defensive lineman untouched.
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in the 133rd pick, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 158 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ethan Driskell. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They read the board right and Braelon Allen was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 36. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A conviction pick on Erick All at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Nathaniel Watson at No. 250, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
