There is reaching, and then there is John Emery Jr. at the 246th overall pick. The Packers jumped the board by 97 and dared it to prove them wrong. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots went begging.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Kamren Kinchens at pick No. 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A conviction pick on Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 41 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A want over a need in pick 68: Junior Colson adds a linebacker while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
Mike Sainristil at slot 88 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Bucky Irving in Round 3, Pick 28 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sataoa Laumea in the 125th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Justin Eboigbe at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Gabe Hall in pick No. 203 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Dwight McGlothern in pick 217 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Thomas this early at slot 219. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for John Emery Jr.. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
