You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Dani Dennis-Sutton in pick No. 78. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
On value alone, Carter makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
They talked themselves into Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 9, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Charles Grant. It fills a real need, too.
Dani Dennis-Sutton at the 78th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Barrett Carter at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Raheim Sanders in pick No. 142 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ricky White III in slot 146 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in the 219th overall pick with a little surplus value in DJ Campbell. The roster fit checks out.
Tony Grimes at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Bryson Nesbit at the 236th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
