The Patriots spent real capital to be 157 picks early on Tyler Batty, and the board is going to hold them to it. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Riley pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a double-digit-sack hope, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyleik Williams at No. 38, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyler Batty at the 69th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jake Majors at Round 3, Pick 13 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jamaree Caldwell this early at pick No. 106. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Will Howard in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Brant Kuithe in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 220th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Roc Taylor at slot 238 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
