Nobody had Howard Cross III this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 65 spots to get him at pick No. 149. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Allen to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a workhorse for the backfield at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Alfred Collins a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They jumped the gun on Chris Paul Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Howard Cross III at the 149th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; LeQuint Allen at Round 5, Pick 33 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Roc Taylor at the 174th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Seth McLaughlin in Round 6, Pick 28 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for John Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A conviction pick on Torricelli Simpkins III at the 239th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Eric Gregory in No. 247, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
