You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Tyler Batty at pick 106, roughly 120 spots before his name belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Gordon II at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Tyleik Williams at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Carson Schwesinger at pick No. 69 that the board grades a round light. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Kaimon Rucker in slot 77, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Tyler Batty at No. 106, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Emery Jones Jr. at pick 144 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Ollie Gordon II was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 1, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cooper Mays at the 220th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Teddye Buchanan. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
