You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Peny Boone in pick No. 44. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
If Mason Graham and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Value said wait; Peny Boone in the Round 2 slot says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Vernon Broughton. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Danny Stutsman at pick 149 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Andres Borregales in slot 171, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Roc Taylor in No. 174 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled KeAndre Lambert-Smith all the way to pick No. 204, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Jordan James was still sitting there in the 211th pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Malachi Moore at Round 7, Pick 23 for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wild overpay on John Campbell Jr. in pick 247, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
