You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Chandler Martin at pick 247, roughly 80 spots before his name belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Bryant. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Derrick Harmon at pick No. 44 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dylan Sampson at the 76th overall pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Cody Simon in Round 5, Pick 11 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Seth McLaughlin in No. 171 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Pat Bryant still on the board at slot 174. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jermari Harris at pick No. 204 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jackson Hawes. It fills a real need, too.
Tyler Loop in slot 239 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They talked themselves into Chandler Martin at the 247th pick, and the board did not agree. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
