Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent pick 99 on Michael Barrett, a name most had 92 spots down the list. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The Jacobs pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with linebacker chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Tykee Smith in the 64th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They went early on Tommy Eichenberg in the 95th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A real head-scratcher, Michael Barrett in pick 99 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cedric Johnson in No. 124, miles early. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid up for Justin Eboigbe at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They reached a country mile for Xavier Thomas at slot 174, and the board is aghast. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Curtis Jacobs at the 212th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Desmond Evans at Round 7, Pick 25 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
