C+
Washington Commanders
The Commanders land in the muddy middle: C+.

2024 NFL Draft
· 11 picks
· 1 steals
· 5 reaches
The Graham Mertz pick is the one that will follow the Commanders into the fall. They took him 417 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Jackson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
If Jer'Zhan Newton and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a wrecking ball inside. A real need, handled.
T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 36 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Graham Mertz at the 39th pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 71 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 81, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Graham Barton. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Adisa Isaac in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Darius Robinson at slot 117 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Gabe Hall at the 144th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy little value on Brevyn Spann-Ford in pick No. 185, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Landon Jackson is a better player than pick 228 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
