The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
Michael Penix Jr. is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
The Abrams-Draine pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 1 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Laiatu Latu. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Chop Robinson in pick No. 37, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 69th pick, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A curious use of No. 105. Interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
Ray Davis at the 109th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Malik Washington slipping to Round 4, Pick 29 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for Kris Abrams-Draine here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
