The war room fell hard for Will Kacmarek, and it showed at pick No. 206: 112 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
On value alone, Taaffe makes the weekend a net positive. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 7 of 9 of the wish list covered.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 18th overall pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, and a steal at that.
In the 24th pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Denzel Boston in slot 39. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Peter Woods reach pick No. 49 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Eli Stowers at No. 70 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jake Slaughter in Round 3, Pick 33 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Davison Igbinosun in the 107th overall pick, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Michael Taaffe at slot 112 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; Cade Klubnik went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Jeff Caldwell at Round 5, Pick 9, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Travis Burke was still sitting there in pick No. 196, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Will Kacmarek well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A slide stopped in the 248th pick, with Latrell McCutchin Sr. worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
