Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Saints were there to profit. DeMonte Capehart, the No. 131 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 190th pick.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Saints indulged a want in Clark while a need in edge rusher and cornerback stayed open.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
No drama and no debate, Christen Miller went about where he belonged in the 38th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dillon Thieneman at No. 42 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Antonio Williams. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jadarian Price is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Bud Clark adds a safety and leaves edge rusher and cornerback untouched.
Jack Endries at pick 120 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Parker Brailsford at Round 4, Pick 32. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Cade Klubnik in the 136th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
By-the-book stuff, Zxavian Harris at slot 150 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Isaiah World in pick 172 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at No. 190 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
