The rest of the league had time to spare on Marcus Mbow; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 130 spots ahead at slot 123. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
The Jackson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Isaiah Bond at pick 41 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malaki Starks at No. 44 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Tyler Booker in the 53rd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Mykel Williams in pick No. 72, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on Deone Walker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Jonah Monheim at No. 113, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Marcus Mbow in pick 123 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Danny Stutsman at Round 5, Pick 6 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Davison Igbinosun. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They reached into another round for Quincy Riley, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
The board fumbled Harold Perkins Jr. all the way to pick No. 188, and they scooped it up. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They will replay Devin Neal at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
J.Michael Sturdivant in the 200th pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oscar Delp in the 209th overall pick, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Mason Taylor at slot 218 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ja'Quinden Jackson in pick No. 220, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Rod Moore still on the board at the Round 7 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Javontez Spraggins at the 256th pick, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
