San Francisco 49ers

A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B-.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent pick 154 on VJ Payne, a name the board had a full 42 spots lower. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

That Hall pick is the receipt they will wave around later. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.13 · Pick 45 · Gabe Jacas · LB-EDGE · rank 52
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabe Jacas. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Gennings Dunker · OT · rank 49
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Gennings Dunker at No. 58. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
Taking Jake Slaughter in pick 80 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · De'Zhaun Stribling · WR · rank 111
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and De'Zhaun Stribling at the 127th pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Nadame Tucker · DE-EDGE · rank 174
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nadame Tucker this early at Round 4, Pick 33. The roster fit checks out.
R4.38 · Pick 138 · Skyler Gill-Howard · DT · rank 151
They paid up for Skyler Gill-Howard at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.39 · Pick 139 · Oscar Delp · TE · rank 132
A reasonable price with a little left over, Oscar Delp in No. 139. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.14 · Pick 154 · VJ Payne · S · rank 196
A swing that ignored the value entirely, VJ Payne well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.34 · Pick 250 · TJ Hall · CB · rank 222
TJ Hall at pick No. 250 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
