When a board-topper like Jalen McMillan slides to pick 125, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The cost of the Powers-Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 41st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
T'Vondre Sweat at the 57th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Bucky Irving at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mike Sainristil in No. 91. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jalen McMillan in pick No. 125, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Taking Curtis Jacobs in slot 203 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Christian Jones at slot 217 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Omar Speights in No. 219 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They took Demani Richardson at par in Round 7, Pick 26, which is nothing to complain about. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
