The trade table was where it all came apart. The Cowboys shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Bortolini has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kamari Lassiter in pick 44 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Payton Wilson at pick No. 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Christian Haynes is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Austin Booker higher than slot 87, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Braelon Allen in the 112th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Christian Jones slid further than he should have, and pick No. 148 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Tanor Bortolini a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Joe Milton III at No. 216. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jaylan Ford in the 233rd pick, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Myles Harden still on the board at Round 7, Pick 24. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
