The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Jermaine Burton, the 88th pick, roughly 39 picks past where he belonged.
The cost of the McGlothern reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Mustapha is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Byron Murphy II at slot 41 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They read the board right and Calen Bullock was the payoff at pick No. 57. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jermaine Burton at No. 88 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Bucky Irving in pick 91 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots to take Malik Mustapha, a safety that was not the priority.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the 135th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Josh Proctor at the Round 6 slot. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dwight McGlothern this early at Round 6, Pick 42. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Xavier Thomas in slot 219 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Eric Gentry at the 246th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
