You build a draft on nights like this. Michael Taaffe had no business being available in the Round 3 slot, and the Lions did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball. Their trades came out a wash either way.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
They let Emmanuel Pregnon come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Michael Taaffe in the 92nd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Tacario Davis at pick 128 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Eric McAlister is a better player than the 205th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and Aaron Graves was the payoff at pick No. 213. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jimmy Rolder. It fills a real need, too.
