The war room fell hard for Dwight McGlothern, and it showed at the 242nd pick: 38 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
A clean, defensible pick in slot 54 with a little surplus value in Graham Barton. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in No. 56. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cooper Beebe in pick No. 80. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
A big swing on Darius Robinson at the 97th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Tommy Eichenberg in the 125th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylen Wright a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kitan Oladapo at slot 173 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Omar Speights in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dwight McGlothern well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
