The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jacob Cowing, the No. 142 name on the board, in slot 178. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Commanders indulged a want in Solomon while a need in quarterback and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
Vidal has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Joe Alt and all.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.5
· Pick 5
· Joe Alt
· OT
· rank 3
In pick No. 5 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Troy Fautanu
· OT
· rank 26
Troy Fautanu slipping to slot 34 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Ja'Tavion Sanders
· TE
· rank 34
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at Round 2, Pick 4, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Chris Braswell
· LB-EDGE
· rank 41
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in the 40th overall pick, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 76
They paid a round early for Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.36
· Pick 99
· Javon Solomon
· OLB-EDGE
· rank 116
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in pick 99 leaves quarterback and interior defensive lineman for later.
R4.1
· Pick 101
· Caelen Carson
· CB
· rank 92
Caelen Carson is a better player than No. 101 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Blake Corum
· RB
· rank 86
You do not let a running back like Blake Corum reach the 104th pick and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.2
· Pick 138
· Jaylin Simpson
· CB
· rank 135
Jaylin Simpson in the 138th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.3
· Pick 178
· Jacob Cowing
· WR
· rank 142
Circle this one: Jacob Cowing at pick 178 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Kimani Vidal
· RB
· rank 240
Kimani Vidal at slot 222 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
