Nobody had Zion Tupuola-Fetui this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 23 spots to get him at No. 158. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Colson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a premier pass rusher, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Malachi Corley went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Max Melton in pick No. 121 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Junior Colson for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at slot 158 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Watson in the 239th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jake Briningstool in No. 242 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
