Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Ricky Pearsall, the No. 200 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 234.
Reaching for Watson left real value on the table behind him. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Job largely done: running back settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Malachi Corley here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Jaden Hicks in pick 117; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Payton Wilson in pick No. 126, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Khyree Jackson all the way to No. 154, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Ricky Pearsall in Round 7, Pick 14 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Blake Watson in the 238th pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
