You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with David Ugwoegbu in the 242nd overall pick. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Allen value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
Chop Robinson in slot 27 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A conviction pick on Edgerrin Cooper at the 53rd pick that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Johnny Wilson slipping to pick 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Braelon Allen at No. 121. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Kris Abrams-Draine, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 27. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A big swing on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 158th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jake Briningstool at Round 7, Pick 19 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, David Ugwoegbu well ahead of where he belonged. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
