You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with Julius Welschof in No. 247.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Texans indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
On value alone, Pearsall makes the weekend a net positive.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 58 on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
They robbed the room for Ricky Pearsall here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Khyree Jackson at No. 123 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Malik Mustapha. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
De'Corian Clark at pick No. 163 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good price on Blake Watson in the 239th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Julius Welschof at pick 247 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
