After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Every board in the league had Byrd lower, and that gap is the story. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
Adonai Mitchell in pick 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Malachi Corley in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Matt Goncalves at the 103rd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Roger Rosengarten went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 1. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They liked Trente Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 180. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach for Jaylen Harrell in pick No. 193; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A real head-scratcher, Solomon Byrd in No. 231 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
