The Packers put a flag in the ground for Clark Barrington, 158 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will answer for taking S-EDGE early while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots went begging. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get an enforcer at safety at fair value.
Chop Robinson at Round 2, Pick 9 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at pick 57 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Gabriel Murphy in slot 88. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A slide stopped in No. 91, with Mike Sainristil worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, wide receiver and other spots to take Jalyx Hunt, a S-EDGE that was not the priority.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 4, Pick 35 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Fair-plus on Christian Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Clark Barrington. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, McKade Mettauer well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Baylor Cupp at the 246th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
