Call it larceny. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. sat on the board until No. 182, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They are betting McCarthy proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Roman Wilson still on the board at pick No. 68. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Javon Baker in slot 104 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Christian Jones at par in Round 4, Pick 36, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Jarvis Brownlee Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A quiet steal in the 229th overall pick: Josh Proctor for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
