You can draft well and still miss the point. The Texans did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to running back, which was the need that mattered most. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Every board in the league had Hopper lower, and that gap is the story. They banked enough surplus on Restrepo to cover a lot of smaller sins. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get a bendy edge with upside, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board had Xavier Legette higher than Round 2, Pick 17, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Malachi Corley in the 90th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cooper Beebe at the 117th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kris Abrams-Draine is a better player than No. 128 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached a country mile for Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 154, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Erick All in slot 234; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 7 slot, where Xavier Restrepo graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
