When a board-topper like M.J. Devonshire slides to Round 7, Pick 13, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The cost of the Bortolini reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Junior Colson in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at the 87th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid a round early for Tanor Bortolini in pick 174, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste in slot 216 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
M.J. Devonshire at No. 233 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nathan Thomas at pick No. 244. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
