If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Jaylan Ford at No. 174 is 31 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in slot 56, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 38 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid a round early for Trevin Wallace in No. 216, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Bub Means, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Rasheen Ali at the 244th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
