There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for Paris Shand, 92 picks ahead of schedule. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Landing Singleton that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 44 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in the 78th overall pick, with TreVeyon Henderson worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Barrett Carter at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Robert Spears-Jennings in Round 5, Pick 31 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They read the board right and Jaeden Roberts was the payoff at pick No. 170. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Shemar Turner in pick 171, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Nicholas Singleton at No. 189 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
A big swing on Paris Shand at the 209th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They will replay Jaylen Reed at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
