Priorities are a choice, and the 49ers made a strange one, taking Max Melton at cornerback in the 131st overall pick with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots crying out for the pick instead.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Melton pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a building block for the line, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nothing to complain about; Cooper DeJean went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy little value on Christian Haynes in No. 94, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 131 on Max Melton with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Jamari Thrash at pick 177 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Willie Roberts in slot 209 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Oronde Gadsden II at the 213th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good price on Cornelius Johnson in Round 6, Pick 40, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Julian Pearl in No. 252, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
