The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. No fireworks, but a solid B.
On value alone, Jacobs makes the weekend a net positive. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
The board fumbled Rome Odunze all the way to the 34th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 68. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nothing to complain about; Brenden Rice went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Josh Newton in pick 137, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land AJ Barner in the 180th pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Myles Cole. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a linebacker like Curtis Jacobs reach No. 231 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
