The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Jason Marshall Jr. slide 39 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Garcia pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
A tight end of that caliber at No. 38 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 5, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Bond at slot 77 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Ozzy Trapilo was still sitting there in No. 105, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Hollin Pierce in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Donovan Edwards here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Jason Marshall Jr. at the 222nd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Gino Garcia at pick No. 240, well ahead of any board in the building. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
