The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Knight. If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a passer to set the clock by, even if it was a touch early.
In No. 23 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. More want than need.
They read the board right and Brian Thomas Jr. was the payoff at the 34th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Blake Fisher in the 68th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Roger Rosengarten in slot 103. The roster fit checks out.
They did well to land Decamerion Richardson in the Round 6 slot, just ahead of his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Isaiah Williams at pick 199 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tyrice Knight in pick No. 231 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Nice patience on Bub Means, who had no business lasting to the 239th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
