The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 236 on Jarquez Hunter a full 130 spots early. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Warren at pick No. 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Ozzy Trapilo at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kevin Winston Jr. this early at slot 77. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Sonny Styles at No. 107, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jake Slaughter at Round 5, Pick 5 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nothing to complain about; Miles Frazier went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Phillip Webb in the 222nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jarquez Hunter at the 236th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
