The Sam Hartman selection is the head-turner. The Vikings reached 82 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. There is no dressing it up: a F.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. However the rest shakes out, Devonshire at that price is a win they earned.
Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 12 they get a bendy edge with upside. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 27th pick they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in the 42nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
By-the-book stuff, Braden Fiske at Round 2, Pick 16 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value with a capital V on Payton Wilson in Round 3, Pick 5, a genuine coup. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They read the board right and Jaden Hicks was the payoff at pick 90. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
DeWayne Carter at slot 108 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fair-plus on Theo Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 157 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A quiet steal in the 167th overall pick: Isaiah Davis for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Sam Hartman in the 177th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dylan Laube at No. 180 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Javion Cohen slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Grayson Murphy in pick No. 188. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Jaylin Simpson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Nice patience on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, who had no business lasting to pick 203. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They let Garret Greenfield come to them and pounced at No. 230. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, M.J. Devonshire in Round 7, Pick 33, plain and simple. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
