Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Nehemiah Pritchett, the No. 146 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 203. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The cost of the Hicks reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tyler Nubin in Round 2, Pick 9. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in the 57th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jaden Hicks adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Will Shipley in pick No. 126 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A slide stopped in slot 168, with Jaylin Simpson worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Nehemiah Pritchett in the 203rd pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Isaiah Davis at Round 6, Pick 41 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Michael Barrett all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Nathaniel Watson at the 251st pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
