Nobody had Taylor Upshaw this high, and it is not close. The Chargers reached 162 spots to get him at pick 226. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The Bowers pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board fumbled Brock Bowers all the way to Round 2, Pick 5, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Blake Corum at the 69th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Blake Fisher at pick No. 105 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Grayson Murphy this early at the 142nd overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Braiden McGregor in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taylor Upshaw at the 226th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
