Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Germie Bernard got past him. The Steelers do not have to explain a thing at the 85th pick. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. With quarterback, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them.
The World reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. More want than need.
By-the-book stuff, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at pick 53 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Josiah Trotter at the 76th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Germie Bernard at Round 3, Pick 21 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Domonique Orange in pick No. 99 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Treydan Stukes in No. 121 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Isaiah World at offensive lineman with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open.
Kevin Coleman Jr. in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Jadon Canady at the 216th pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jeremiah Wright at the Round 7 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A tidy bit of business in pick 230, where Jimmy Rolder graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaren Kanak slipping to the 237th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
