The Commanders did not so much draft Jaydon Blue as overpay for him, 79 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Pierce. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 29 they get a double-digit-sack hope, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Alfred Collins at the 61st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Darien Porter at par in No. 79, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Hollin Pierce all the way to pick 148, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 207 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Jalen Travis at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Jaydon Blue in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
