For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The 49ers walked out of the weekend still thin at quarterback, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
They are betting Gulbin proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 31 they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value.
They jumped the gun on Joshua Josephs, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for De'Zhaun Stribling in the 95th pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Trey Zuhn III in the 127th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kaleb Proctor in Round 4, Pick 31 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kaytron Allen at pick 139 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Matt Gulbin in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jeff Caldwell at slot 182 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
