There is reaching, and then there is Myles Hinton at the 240th pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 129 and dared it to prove them wrong. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Williams. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a mismatch in the passing game, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Donovan Ezeiruaku at the 38th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Deone Walker in the 69th pick, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Savion Williams in No. 105. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Bhayshul Tuten in Round 5, Pick 6 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jackson Hawes in No. 219, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Clay Webb well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Myles Hinton in pick 240, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
