The Giants went off the board in a big way for Zakhari Franklin, 44 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. Spending an early pick on defensive back with safety, cornerback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
Patrick Paul at slot 57 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking T.J. Tampa at defensive back with safety, cornerback and other spots open.
Chris Braswell in the 67th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A curious use of No. 74. Safety, cornerback and other spots needed the pick; a defensive back in Kris Abrams-Draine did not.
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at the 83rd overall pick, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tyleik Williams at slot 104 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Zach Frazier at the 125th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jack Nelson at No. 139 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
KJ Jefferson at Round 5, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
De'Corian Clark in pick 143 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Ainias Smith went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Byron Murphy II at pick No. 160, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Bru McCoy in the 168th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Tre Harris at par in the 179th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 187 with a little surplus value in Jestin Jacobs. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid sticker price for Jalen Catalon in the 196th pick, and that is fine. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
A reach for Dwight McGlothern in Round 6, Pick 24; a little patience would have been rewarded. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
They paid a round early for LaDarius Henderson in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zakhari Franklin in No. 224 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on J.J. Weaver in slot 246; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
