You build a draft on nights like this. Jared Wilson had no business being available in pick 217, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Every board in the league had Burks lower, and that gap is the story.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in pick No. 38, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Watts at No. 69 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Omarion Hampton in pick 77, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Demetrius Knight Jr. still on the board at the Round 4 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Tez Johnson in the 143rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jared Wilson at Round 7, Pick 1 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Miles Frazier at slot 220, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Deion Burks at Round 7, Pick 22 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
