When the story of this class is written, it opens with Demani Richardson at the Round 7 slot, a reach of 49 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at Round 2, Pick 26 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Marshawn Kneeland in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Trey Benson at par in pick No. 91, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Leonard Taylor III went about where he belonged in No. 101. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They jumped the gun on James Williams, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No edge and no loss on Ainias Smith in pick No. 127; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Josh Newton in Round 4, Pick 28 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Sione Vaki at slot 168, value and slot in agreement. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They paid up for Drake Nugent at No. 188 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Tahj Washington, who had no business lasting to the 204th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tyrice Knight in pick 216 is fair value, right on his grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Somehow Elijah Jones was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, LaDarius Henderson at slot 239 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jawhar Jordan this early at the 243rd overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Joshua Cephus at Round 7, Pick 30 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
