The Patriots bet big and early on David Walker, 86 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
So much rides on Quinn Ewers that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
Warren falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get a franchise quarterback, reach and all.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Charles Grant well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Dylan Fairchild at Round 2, Pick 21 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Clay Webb in the 68th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jayden Higgins this early at slot 83. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Tyler Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Fair-plus on Darien Porter, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
This one needs a full-page explanation: David Walker in pick 105, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Alfred Collins at pick No. 114. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Gunnar Helm. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Elijhah Badger in Round 7, Pick 6 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach the 224th overall pick and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on Thor Griffith at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
