Thirty-one other rooms let Andrew Mukuba slide, and the Cowboys were the ones holding the card at No. 149. Highway robbery.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Taking Jalon Walker in No. 45 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in slot 55, with Kaleb Johnson worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Barrett Carter at pick 76 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 16: Deone Walker for less than the market said. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 86, where Isaiah Bond graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Andrew Mukuba at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jonah Monheim at the 171st pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Dorian Strong in the 174th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
DJ Giddens at the 204th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Chase Lundt still on the board at the Round 6 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Jamon Dumas-Johnson in No. 216; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Theo Wease Jr. at slot 239 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Brandon Adams at Round 7, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
