You could see the war room lean forward. Andru Phillips at the Round 6 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Adding Tyler Higbee by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for JC Latham in the 19th overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kool-Aid McKinstry at No. 39 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Xavier Legette slid further than he should have, and the Round 2 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at slot 51 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Christian Haynes at pick No. 70 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the 107th pick, with Bucky Irving worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Luke McCaffrey in pick 143 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Braelon Allen at Round 5, Pick 20, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Michael Barrett at slot 185 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Andru Phillips in pick No. 191 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
